What Is CBD?

CBD is an acronym for cannabidiol, which is a naturally occurring compound found on the flower of the hemp plant. These naturally occurring compounds are also known as phytocannabinoids. CBD has important therapeutic benefits, without the intoxicating effects of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, which is found in high amounts in marijuana.

The Endocannabinoid

The human body contains a naturally occurring, self-regulating system of receptors, CB1 and CB2, called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). These cannabinoid receptors exist throughout the body including the central and peripheral nervous systems, the brain, organs, and tissues. All mammals, dogs, cats, horses, etc, contain an ECS and produce endocannabinoids.

The ECS communicates with essentially every system in the body and plays a vital role in the establishment and maintenance of our health. Everyone’s ECS varies, to keep all body systems in homeostasis, or a state of equilibrium. The endocannabinoids are cannabinoid-like molecules that are already produced in our bodies. Thus, by supplementing our body and endocannabinoid system with cannabinoids from hemp, this “balance” can be adjusted and restored, and consequently achieved.

How Do I Start?

The best way to start a CBD regimen is to begin by taking the minimum recommendation, and increasing the amount as needed— and most importantly, consistency is key. Be patient, as it may take a few days for your body to “balance” and begin experiencing the cannabinoid benefits. As regular, continued use is realized, the body will continue to remain balanced. Before you start taking CBD oil, it’s essential to ask the right questions:

It is also important to understand what potential benefits you are seeking before beginning a CBD regimen. From taking a tincture, capsule, or using a lotion topically — defining your goals will help you decide what form of CBD is best for you. If you are seeking well-being benefits like reduced anxiety or hypertension, it may be most beneficial to take CBD oil orally, either sublingually via CBD tinctures or CBD capsules. If you are looking for a potential skin condition or inflammation relief, it may be best to use CBD oil topically.
